BART ends wireless Internet service at underground stations, looks for new … – Contra Costa Times

BART has terminated its wireless Internet service in underground train stations in San Francisco and Oakland to clear the path for finding a new provider, the rapid transit district announced Monday.

Wi-Fi Rail Inc. had an agreement with BART to start and operate the free Wi-Fi service in hopes that it would be expanded and become commercially sustainable with either fees or advertising.

Transit officials, however, were not satisfied with the service, and the company had not come up with a plan to expand to other underground train stations, said BART spokesman Jim Allison.

Terminating the agreement enables BART to find a new provider at some undetermined date, Allison said.

Cell phone service on BART was not affected by the change in Wi-Fi service, officials said.
